Over 1000 backpacks distributed at GWUL's Back To School Festival

On Saturday, August 6, 2016 The Greater Washington Urban League in partnership with Thurgood Marshall Center Trust, Inc. (TMCT) and Trusted Health Plan (THP), hosted its 4th Annual Community Health and Wellness Back to School Festival.  For the second year the festival was held at our community partner Thurgood Marshall Center Trust’s facility and saw the return of Local performing artist Reesa Renee.

The FREE and Open to the Public festival assisted area residents with health screenings provided by Trusted Health Plan which included:  35 Lead Screenings, 22 Physicals, and 6 HIV tests.  Attendees were given opportunities for Pediatric dental screenings led by Essence Dental and Howard University College of Dentistry which yielded a total of 185 young people receiving on the spot dental care.   Service providers assisted residents with enrollment in health plans and provided parents with valuable health information.

It was a jam packed day of family fun activities, safe food handling demonstrations by USDA and Healthy Eating Cooking demonstrations by City Weeds. Greater Washington Urban League also distributed fresh fruits and vegetables donated by Capital Area Food Bank.

The event featured live music provided by DJ Curley Sue, food, sno-cones, raffles and entertainment for kids including a moon bounce and face painting.  With the generous contributions of our community partners; the league gave away free haircuts and hairstyles for kids provided by Hair Academy New Carrollton and over 1000 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to school age children as a reward for visiting and gathering information from all of the festival zones.

Greater Washington Urban League, Thurgood Marshall Center Trust, Inc. and Trusted Health Plan would like to also thank All of the Wonderful community partners such as Andrews Federal Credit Union, M&T Bank, Washington Mystics and local businesses and entrepreneurs for taking time to share their goods and services with the community we serve.  A huge thank you is extended to Foreman Mills, Whole Foods Markets, and Sports Zone Elite for their generous raffle prize gifts.

This year’s festival was fun and informative for the whole family.  We look forward to seeing you Next year!
