Greater Washington Urban League (GWUL) Will Present the 37th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial Gala on March 18, 2009

The Greater Washington Urban League (GWUL) will present the 37th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial Gala on March 18, 2009 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, Washington, DC. Under the theme “Stepping Up to the Plate: Yes We Can!” the 2009 Gala will salute those who have stepped up against all odds and made a difference.

The Whitney M. Young Jr. Community Service Awards will be presented to Tamara C. Darvish (Chair, Washington Area New Automobile Dealers Association and Vice President, DARCARS Automotive Group), Craig Jefferies (Football Coach, Dunbar High School, Washington, DC), US Army and the Washington Nationals. Also, humanitarian and actor Hill Harper (CSI: NY) is receiving the GWUL's Ronald H. Brown International Community Service Award.

Masters of Ceremonies for the GWUL Gala are Lindsay Czarniak (Sports Anchor & Reporter, NBC 4-TV) and Craig Melvin (Weekend News Anchor, NBC4-TV). The GWUL 37th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial Gala Scholarships will be presented by: Safeway/ Western Union, Pepsi Bottling Group, Charlotte Elizabeth Yancey Eights Trust and the GWUL Thursday Network Young Professionals Auxiliary. There will be special performances by the Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Greenbelt, MD) Step Team, Dem Raider Boyz, and vocalist Kevin Ross of Washington, DC. The event is produced by Major Jack Productions, “Believe in the Vision.”

VIP Guests will also include; Marc H. Morial (President, National Urban League, Inc.); Jerry A. Moore III (Chair, GWUL Board of Directors and Partner, Venable LLP); Maudine R. Cooper (President & CEO, GWUL); Walter M. Oliver (GWUL Gala General CO-Chair & Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Administration, General Dynamics); Todd E. Heavner (GWUL Gala General CO-Chair & Regional Vice President, Enterprise Rent-A-Car); Omarosa ("Celebrity Apprentice"); City Council Members; and Special Guests.
