Greater Washington Urban League and NBC Universal Foundation Induct Students into National Achievers Society

Nov 19, 2007

The Greater Washington Urban League (GWUL) in collaboration with NBC Universal Foundation presents its 9th Annual National Achievers Society Induction Ceremony. This event will take place on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at 3 pm at Israel Baptist Church on 1251 Saratoga Avenue NE in Washington, D.C. THE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

This event will honor area students from the District, Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in grades 7 through 12 who have achieved a 3.0 grade average or above and are involved in community or faith based activities. This year’s event will induct 91 students. NBC4-TV News Anchor and Reporter Keith Garvin will preside over the event as Master of Ceremonies. Additionally, the Honorable Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. of the United States District Court for Maryland will be the special guest speaker. A light reception will follow the Ceremony.

The National Achievers Society is the National Urban League’s academic honor society. The Society began in 1997 after the forming of a coalition between national black organizations including representatives from the faith-based community, social and civic organizations and professional associations. The coalition sought to address the educational and development crises facing African-American children and youth of color.

Inducted students must earn all As or Bs, no Cs, unless they are in advanced or honors courses. Through the society, students are encouraged and offered opportunities for scholarships and mentoring. The National Achievers Society is designed to drastically reduce the negative peer pressure associated with academic achievement and bring nationwide attention to young African-Americans and youth of color who demonstrate achievement in school and their communities. GWUL President and CEO Maudine R. Cooper says, "The National Achievers Program is the Urban League’s effort to recognize outstanding youth and provide them with support, opportunities to travel, career exploration workshops, networking, and continued encouragement for success." The Greater Washington Urban League has inducted over 500 students to date.
