NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE YOUTH SUMMIT '99

subjects that address their needs and interests on such subjects as education, music and
career opportunities.
CELEBRATING YOUTH
13 STUDENTS HONORED FOR ACHIEVEMENT AT
4TH ANNUAL GREATER WASHINGTON URBAN LEAGUE PARENT EXPO
During the Greater Washington Urban Leagues (GWULs) 4th Annual
Parent Expo on October 2, 1999, at the D.C. Armory, 13 local middle and high school
students were honored for their accomplishments in the areas of outstanding academic
achievement, outstanding personal achievement, leadership and/or community service.
Honoring students at the Parent Expo gave parents and families in the community the
opportunity to see shining examples of what hard work, proper guidance and encouragement
can produce. "We are extremely proud of these students. And we want the community to
know that there are many others like them who can succeed at high levels with the
encouragement of parents and other caring adults," said GWUL President Maudine R.
Cooper. Approximately 1,500 persons attended the Parent Expo and Youth Celebratory Event.
Students recognized for academic achievement were: Carlos Coleman, Charles Hart
Middle School; Sean Hardy, P.R. Harris Education Center; Lakeda Martin,
Anacostia High School; and Joseph Paire, Friendly High School (Prince Georges
County).
Those saluted for personal achievement were: Tania Bond, Kramer Middle School; Tameka
Davis, Ballou Senior High School; Diana Gottschalk, Macfarland Middle School;
and Shayna Hood, Paul Junior High School; Jacquida D. Kebe, Paul Laurence
Dunbar High School; and Rasheda M. Simon, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
In the areas of community service and leadership, honors went to Cesar Aviles,
Bell Multicultural High School; Chris Jackson, Wilson High School; and Christopher
Robinson, School Without Walls High School.
Acknowledging student achievement is a major component of the National Urban
Leagues (NULs) Campaign for African-American Achievement and locally, the
Greater Washington Urban Leagues Campaign for Student Achievement. NUL President
Hugh B. Price has said that it "is time for our community to celebrate children in a
positive way. In a rapidly changing world, with relentless pressures and seemingly
impossible problems, weve allowed the negative stories and perceptions to be
accepted as the norm and no generation is more vulnerable or attuned to the media than
kids. Things have gotten turned upside down and its time we put them right."
CAMP GUIDES ARE COMING
Annually, the League publishes its Guide to Summer Camps and Enrichment Programs. This guide gives parents information on summer programs throughout the metropolitan area. It is free and available as long as supplies last. Information includes fees, hours, activities and registration information. This year's guide will be published in April.
Last year, the League distributed 10,000 copies of the guide. To request a copy, call the Education Division at 202-265-8200, Ext. 254, or E-mail your request to LUWGDBS@aol.com.
TICKETS, TICKETS, TICKETS!!!
The League has developed an on-going relationship with Feld Entertainment to distribute
discounted coupons for select activities in the city. During 1998/99, the League
distributed 50,000 coupons (English and Spanish) for performances of the Ringling
Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus and the Beauty and the Beast Ice Show. The League also
was able to provide parents and their children with tickets to the Wizards' basketball
games and local theater productions.
