Youth Environmental Program

The League’s environmental education programs introduce youth to a spectrum of environmental issues affecting the quality of health and life in their urban community. Youth are challenged and encouraged to explore how water and air quality affect their lives.

Youth are challenged and encouraged to explore how water and air quality are affected by land use and legislation. Program activities include:

  • Career Training
  • Mentor Program
  • Leadership Skills Training

    Trees

Participants are involved in an Urban Forest Training Program, which includes building riparian walls on the banks of the Anacostia River. People and natural systems are both part of the urban forest which includes a concern about urban air quality, storm water runoff, wildlife and fish habitat and other related ecosystem concerns.

    Water Festival

The Urban Water Festival is an informal out-of-door exhibition on the Anacostia River featuring hands-on water education and environmental activities. Geared towards youth of all ages, the Festival integrates leadership skills development by using the Environmental Youth Program participants as group leaders and festival guides. Thousands of children throughout D.C. now have a greater understanding about and appreciation for their own part in creating and maintaining healthy air and water.

    Wonderful Outdoor World

This consortium of environmental organizations provides camping experiences to youth and their families in an urban setting. This year over 600 youth and their families will experience the wonderful outdoor world.
