Overview
GWUL is a major interracial, nonpartisan, nonprofit community service and civil rights organization using the tools of social work, advocacy, law, and other disciplines to expand economic opportunities and access to traditionally underserved communities in the Washington Metropolitan area. The mission is: “to increase the economic and political empowerment of blacks and other minorities and to help all Americans share equally in the responsibilities and rewards of full citizenship.” Through direct services and advocacy, we serve over 60,000 individuals annually from our 30+ programs in the areas of Aging Services, Education, Employment and Training, and Housing and Community Development.
The League’s Housing Division builds financial bridges from rental housing to the American dream of homeownership and stability for families in metropolitan Washington. It also conducts programs throughout the year on financial literacy for youth and adults to help them understand resource investment and wealth accumulation, two things that move generations of families from poverty to economic security.
The Greater Washington Urban League Home Counseling Program covers Washington DC and Prince George's County.
