President's Message
Maudine R. Cooper
President and CEO Greater Washington Urban League

The Greater Washington Urban League is your resource center in the community for youth internships and scholarships, parenting information, first-time homebuyer assistance, employment/technology training, aging services, and environmental education. You can make a real difference in the life of a child, an at-risk teen looking for direction, an unemployed adult seeking skills training, or a senior citizen by supporting the work of the League. When you choose the League, you choose an organization with a proven track record of changing and improving the lives of thousands of Washington area residents for more than 60 years.
Some 10,000 parents and students received information and assistance from our Education Division last year. Our Aging Services office provides nutrition and health services to more than 5,000 senior citizens annually in Wards 2 and 5 of the city. For the fiscal year that ended September 30, 2001, the GWUL's Housing Division assisted 472 families to become first-time homebuyers in the District of Columbia. This past spring, the GWUL opened its AT&T Digital Campus in the Anacostia community offering classes for residents and small businesses. The Environmental Division teaches youth and adults about the importance of healthy air, water, and neighborhoods. Overall, our 26 distinct programs, provided services to more than 60,000 persons in the Washington metropolitan area last fiscal year alone.
