The Urban Environmental WALL (Water, Air, Land, and Legislation) program introduces youth to a spectrum of environmental issues affecting the quality of health and life in their urban community. Youth are challenged and encouraged to explore how water and air quality are affected by land use and legislation. Program activities include: Career Training Experience, Mentor Program, Leadership Skills Training, Boat Building Project, Potomac River Program and Water Festival. The theme for this First Annual Urban Water Festival was "Educating Our Youth to Save Our Environment." Funding sources include the EPA Small and Disadvantaged Businesses Program, Prince Charitable Trust, Groundwater Guardians and Project WET. Partnering agencies are the Alexandria Seaport Foundation, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the D.C. Youth Employment Program. Environmental Justice and Education Program This eight-week career training experience co-sponsored by GWUL, Alice Hamilton Occupational Health Center and Abatement Environmental Resources prepares adult male ex-offenders for a career in asbestos and lead abatement. Trees Participants are involved in an Urban Forest Training Program, which includes building riparian walls on the banks of the Anacostia River. People and natural systems are both part of the urban forest which includes a concern about urban air quality, storm water runoff, wildlife and fish habitat and other related ecosystem concerns. Water Festival The Urban Water Festival is an informal out-of-door exhibition on the Anacostia River featuring hands-on water education and environmental activities. Geared towards youth of all ages, the Festival integrates leadership skills development by using the Environmental Youth Program participants as group leaders and festival guides. Thousands of children throughout D.C. now have a greater understanding about and appreciation for their own part in creating and maintaining healthy air and water. Project WET The GWUL is the sole sponsor of Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) in the District of Columbia. Project WET is an international, interdisciplinary water science and education program for formal and nonformal educators of K-12 students. It is expected that more than 12,000 youth in the District of Columbia will receive Water Education Training in 1999.
