Through this program, 35 youth age 15 and 16 and 10 children age eight and nine are being prepared to attend college upon high school graduation. The students and their parents participate in a variety of programs designed to help the students achieve the highest academic levels, understand the college admissions process and the different types of post-secondary choices available to them. The League is the community sponsor for the program and is responsible for academic coordination, program and student monitoring and recruitment of volunteers to work with the students. The students also participate in cultural enrichment activities and receive family services as needed. There are currently three financial sponsors for the program: the Merrill Lynch Foundation, the Rainbow Fund and Discovery Communications. The program began in 1988 The Merrill Lynch Foundation teamed with the National Urban League to create the Scholarship Builder program in 10 Urban League affiliate cities. The Greater Washington Urban League expanded its program to include two additional sponsors. All participating students were selected in the first grade and will receive a minimum of $2,000 toward their college education. Parent Education And Training |
