PARENT EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Parent Assistance and Family Abuse and Neglect Programs

The US Department of Education awarded the League a $264,712 grant in 1995 to enhance parent assistance centers in the city. The grant calls for the establishment of full service centers or the revitalization of existing centers. Through the grant, we offer a variety of services to parents, educators, human services personnel and other stakeholders to help parents build and/or enhance their parenting skills and their involvement in the education of their children. The grant is renewable for four years.

During the last three years, we have conducted parenting workshops for approximately 1,200 parents and distributed information to approximately 5,000 parents, service providers, educators, and other stakeholders. The program has established a resource library of more than 250 titles in English. Forty titles (22%) are available in Spanish. Materials from the library have helped schools and other parental service providers establish their resource libraries. To date, the program has established 12 off-site resource libraries in schools, apartment complexes and community-based facilities. The Parental Assistance program sponsors a citywide Parent Expo where community service providers exhibit providing information on the services they offer. The fact that there was an 8% increase in the number of service providers exhibiting during the second expo over the first has evidenced the success of the expo.

During the 3rd program year, the League established a Parent Center Web Page. Since June of 1998, more than 7,000 individuals, businesses, organizations and/or government agencies have visited the web site. The site is updated on a monthly basis to ensure the information in timely. The web site address is www.gwulparentcenter.org.

The League has been awarded a fourth year Parent Assistance grant and a supplemental grant totaling $304,000. During the fourth year, program staff will provide services to the entire community with special attention being given to adolescent mothers and males.

The DC Children's Trust Foundation awarded the League a second grant to administer a Family Abuse and Neglect grant. Through the grant, the League will provided education and training on abuse and neglect to adolescent mothers and males functioning in a parental role to children.
